About The Book: Natural Rivals traces the contrasting philosophies of John Muir, the idealistic naturalist who fought to preserve wilderness, and Gifford Pinchot, the pragmatic founder of the U.S. Forest Service who promoted sustainable resource management. Their rivalry, highlighted by the Hetch Hetchy dam debate and earlier experiences like their 1896 camping trip in Montana, shaped the creation of America’s public lands system. The book explores how their competing approaches ultimately helped establish national parks and forests, highlighting the lasting impact of their differing visions.
